Summary

Everyone likes Hani Kahn—she’s easy going and one of the most popular girls at school。 But when she comes out to her friends as bisexual, they invalidate her identity, saying she can’t be bi if she’s only dated guys。 Panicked, Hani blurts out that she’s in a relationship…with a girl her friends absolutely hate—Ishita Dey。 Ishita is the complete opposite of Hani。 She’s an academic overachiever who hopes that becoming head girl will set her on the right track for college。 But Ishita agrees to help Hani, if Hani will help her become more popular so that she stands a chance of being elected head girl。

Despite their mutually beneficial pact, they start developing real feelings for each other。 But relationships are complicated, and some people will do anything to stop two Bengali girls from achieving happily ever after。

This, kids is why representation matters。 A beautiful book about LGBT South Asian girls who are so cute together, is really wholesome and confronts topics like biphobia, lesbophobia, racism (specifically against South Asians)。

AHHH I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK。 I usually am not a big fan of the fake dating trope but this book sold me!! I loved Hani and Ishu, as well as their relationship as it developed。 It felt natural and sweet, as well as realistic for being two teen girls in high school dealing with not only homophobia but also islamophobia。 all of the family dynamics were really captivating and I especially loved Ishu’s relationship with her sister。 My only issue with this book is hani’s ‘friends’!!! I just, didn’t understand how she couldn’t see how horrible her friends were being to her - and as someone who has had some pretty shitty friends (though I have never faced racism like Hani did here) i could still see how they were being asshles。 I think that maybe the friends could have been more subtle? (i’m not sure what word to use here) and manipulative behind fake cheer instead of hitting the reader over the head with ‘these people are horrible!!’ so blatantly。 it made Hani come across as oblivious even though she really wasn’t for everything else。 otherwise I adored this book! I highly recommend to everyone!!! :) 。。。more

4*I'm a slut for a fake dating trope。。Trigger ⚠️ Warnings: Islamophobia, biphobia, homophobia, racism, bullying, toxic friendships, emotional abuse, parental abandonment。 I loved this! I smiled and giggled and rooted for our girls! There were really sad parts and really heartwarming parts and insanely infuriating parts, but it really struck a nice balance between heightened YA romcom cute and realistic social and cultural commentary。10/10 would recommend。 4*I'm a slut for a fake dating trope。。Trigger ⚠️ Warnings: Islamophobia, biphobia, homophobia, racism, bullying, toxic friendships, emotional abuse, parental abandonment。 I loved this! 3。5/5 star, rounded to 4 stars。*minor spoiler ahead*Some issues I observed while reading the book:- Hani and Ishu have similar "voice"。 Sometimes I find myself having to turn back a few pages or to deduce based on contextual clues whose turn is it narrating the story- For prominent side characters, Aisling and Deirdre seem quite one dimensional (especially Deirdre who's just presented as Aisling's yes woman), but I'll give it a pass as we are viewing the world mainly through Hani and Ishu's bias 3。5/5 star, rounded to 4 stars。*minor spoiler ahead*Some issues I observed while reading the book:- Hani and Ishu have similar "voice"。 Sometimes I find myself having to turn back a few pages or to deduce based on contextual clues whose turn is it narrating the story- For prominent side characters, Aisling and Deirdre seem quite one dimensional (especially Deirdre who's just presented as Aisling's yes woman), but I'll give it a pass as we are viewing the world mainly through Hani and Ishu's biased perspective- Some of the themes feel unresolved, but in a way, it helps to drive the point that there's no solution for these issues at this stage of time as we can still see them ongoing in real life (mainly issues regarding racism)What I enjoyed while reading:- Nik。 Nikhita。 Big sister Nik。 Bold, brave, strong, dependable Nik。 I fell in love a little with Nik。 - Hani and Ishu's individual journey。 As Ishu kindly pointed out to Hani at one point, they are very different people with unique journeys。 Yet I'm glad they found someone who complemented them and make them improve as individuals。- No big, cliché reveal by the antagonist (in this story, maybe Aisling or Deirdre) that the two were actually fake dating, and no one was outed without consent。 Instead, both chose to reveal the truth at their own time, to people of their choosing minus the exception of an accidental sharing of their Google doc (oops)。 At least the person who got the access respected their privacy and kept it a secret。Being a queer Muslim POC, I relate to some of Hani's experience and I did wish that the theme of religion vs sexuality would be explored further, especially since Hani seems very attuned to Islamic teaching but I also understand that it doesn't really fit the tone of the book, despite mention near the end about a gay teenager struggling to reconcile between religion and sexuality。 I still wish to see the theme explored one day though, especially in regards to Muslim queers because we do exist。 I enjoyed The Henna War and Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating and would be looking forward to future works by Adiba Jaigirdar。 。。。more

3。5 ⭐️ short and easy but enjoyable read! i wanted something with fluff to get me through my first week of school & this was a good choice。 it did a very good job balancing heavy topics with romantic fluff。 ultimately though, the plot and characters were a little stiff。 a lot of actions just seem…unbelievable? the dialogue, too, sounded kind of unnatural。 besides hani and ishu, the minor characters seemed one-dimensional, and i couldn’t get all that invested in their romance, there wasn’t much b 3。5 ⭐️ short and easy but enjoyable read! i wanted something with fluff to get me through my first week of school & this was a good choice。 it did a very good job balancing heavy topics with romantic fluff。 ultimately though, the plot and characters were a little stiff。 a lot of actions just seem…unbelievable? the dialogue, too, sounded kind of unnatural。 besides hani and ishu, the minor characters seemed one-dimensional, and i couldn’t get all that invested in their romance, there wasn’t much build-up to the actual pining, it was sort of just stated。 my favorite part of the book was ishu and nik’s relationship, i absolutely loved the bond they formed and nik’s encouragement to become her own person。 i would’ve read her own book。 the exploration of toxic friendships, too, was done very well, if a little overdramatized at times。 i wish it would’ve gone deeper into ishu’s relationship with her parents and the results of her decisions but i suppose that’s a lot to pack in to a romance novel。 this satisfied the exact craving i had for YA romance and for what it is, it’s done well。 i can’t exactly speak on the representation, but i know many other reviewers have praised it and it’s great to see representation for cultures that aren’t often represented in sapphic stories or, really, YA as a whole。 the romance plot itself might’ve been a little tropey, but sometimes that’s just what you need。 。。。more

SO PERFECT! it was so easy to fly through this book I refused to put it down for the night until I absolutely couldn't keep my eyes open anymore。 I loved the way Hani and Ishu's relationship didn't feel forced or rushed in the slightest。 the switch in point of views between both characters in different chapters allows the reader to understand both Hani and Ishu's perspectives better while also adding depth to the characters and their lives。 I cannot say enough about how well written this book is SO PERFECT! it was so easy to fly through this book I refused to put it down for the night until I absolutely couldn't keep my eyes open anymore。 I loved the way Hani and Ishu's relationship didn't feel forced or rushed in the slightest。 the switch in point of views between both characters in different chapters allows the reader to understand both Hani and Ishu's perspectives better while also adding depth to the characters and their lives。 I cannot say enough about how well written this book is and how incredibly easy it was for me to fall in love with both Hani and Ishu's characters。 I'm so impressed with the amount of important issues that are not only touched on in this book but thoroughly discussed。 absolutely loved the closeness and trust that was established between Hani and Ishu, not only through their dialogue but through their thoughts and actions。 I also loved Ishu and Nik's growth as siblings and admired them both for standing up for each other and developing their relationship against all odds。 this book gave me a rush of so many emotions and was just such a sweet story in general。 genuinely wish i could erase it from my memory and reread it again for the first time 😭 so heart warming and impossible to put down 。。。more

I was so very excited for this book to come out! I had been wanting to read a fun and sweet romance between two South Asian characters however, this book fell flat in terms of my expectations。 I will preface this review by saying that this book is intended for a younger audience so that may have been a part of the reason why I didn’t mesh with this book。 I found a lot of situations, miscommunication, etc。 to be childish。At once point I had noticed when I was halfway through the book I was still I was so very excited for this book to come out!
